A Short Guide to Hotel Loyalty Programs

Loyalty programs are worth the five minutes it takes to sign up for frequent travellers, and considerably less worth it for the occasional trip — the value compounds with repeat stays, not with a single booking.

Where the Real Value Sits

The most useful benefit for most guests isn’t the points balance building toward a future free night. It’s the smaller, immediate advantages: being remembered across visits, a preference noted once and honoured every time after, a faster check-in that skips the usual back-and-forth.

Points do add up eventually, but the guests who get genuine value from them are almost always the ones travelling to the same city, or the same hotel group, repeatedly — not the occasional traveller collecting a scattered handful of points across unrelated trips.

Is It Worth Signing Up For a One-Off Stay?

Usually yes, if only because there’s no real downside — most programs cost nothing to join and take a couple of minutes at check-in. The upside on a single stay is modest, but it costs nothing to bank whatever small recognition comes with it for a future visit.

The mistake worth avoiding is choosing a hotel based on loyalty points alone, when the property itself isn’t actually the right fit for the trip. Points are a nice bonus on top of the right choice — not a good enough reason to make the wrong one.
